History of the Society

Space Society is one of the oldest societies on campus. In the 2005/06 academic year we had over 70 members.

The society is open to all members of the University no matter what your degree background, we aim to cater to all.

We have 2 fixed 12-inch telescopes in Parkwood on campus and 7 portable smaller telescopes.

We also offer the chance for members to design and launch their own rockets. Last year we travelled to Devon to conduct launches as well as some smaller launches on campus.

The society is one of the most active on campus with regular meetings every two weeks, with guest speakers that in the past have included members of the ESA (European Space Agency) Casini-Huygens team and members of the NASA Mars rover projects. We also organise socials on campus and off campus, last year travelling to Alton Towers and Thorpe Park as well as bowling trips and pub nights.

The society plans another trip to
Europe this year. After the hugely successful trip to the ESA in the Netherlands this year, we plan to go to CERN in Switzerland. There will also be the continuation of trips to observatories in the UK and the use of the Faulkes Telescope remotely from Hawaii.
